Windows uses different folders, which are not described here. ## Settings you change with a command | Setting | How to change it, and where it is kept | | - | - | | Provider and key | `/provider` or `/connect`. `/connect show` says which key is in use, `/connect forget` removes the stored one. Kept in `~/.mochiii/credentials.json` | | Model | `/model`, `/model `, `/model clear`. Kept with the stored key. With a key from the environment, it lasts until the background service stops | | Tools for a model on this computer | `/agent on`, `/agent off`. Kept in `local-models.json` | | Internet tools for a model on this computer | `/web on`, `/web off`. Kept in `local-models.json` | | Mouse capture | `/mouse`. Not kept after you quit | | Indexing this folder | Answer `never` when Mochiii offers to index the folder. Kept in `no-index` | | Active spec | `/spec use `, `/spec off`. Kept in `active-spec-` | | Rules for this project | `/remember `, `/forget `. Kept in `rules/.md` | | MCP servers | `/mcp-server`. See [Add an MCP server](https://docs.mochiii.in/mcp/add-a-server.md). Kept in `~/.mochiii/` | A file named without a folder is in the state folder, `~/.local/state/mochiii/`, described below. The spending limits are 3.00M tokens or $1.00 for a session, and 15.00M tokens or $5.00 a day for every project on the computer. `/budget` shows where both stand. Once a limit is at 80% or more, `/budget more` allows another allotment of it. ## Settings you change with the environment Set these before you start Mochiii. Mochiii's background service reads its variables when it starts, so run `mochiii --stop` first if it is already running. | Variable | What it does | | - | - | | `MOCHIII_API_KEY` | A provider key. It is used instead of a stored key | | `MOCHIII_API_BASE` | The address of the provider's API. Without it, Mochiii uses `https://openrouter.ai/api/v1` | | `MOCHIII_MODEL` | One model, named as the server at `MOCHIII_API_BASE` names it. It replaces the built-in list of models | | `MOCHIII_NO_INDEX=1` | Do not offer to index this folder. The same as `mochiii --no-index` | | `MOCHIII_MAX_TURNS` | How many turns the chat on screen keeps before it trims the oldest. 500 by default | | `MOCHIII_MAX_TRANSCRIPT_BYTES` | How much text the chat on screen keeps before it trims the oldest. 2.0 MB by default | | `NO_COLOR` | Any value turns colour off | | `XDG_STATE_HOME` | Moves the state folder, below, to `$XDG_STATE_HOME/mochiii` | ## Files and folders `` is a short code Mochiii makes from the project folder's path. It is the same code in every file name below. ### In your home folder: `~/.mochiii/` | Path | What it holds | | - | - | | `credentials.json` | The provider key you gave, the address it is for, and the model you chose | | `github.json` | The GitHub token you gave with `/github connect` | | `mcp-servers.json` | The MCP servers you added | | `mcp-secrets.json` | Keys you gave MCP servers | | `mcp-approvals.json` | Servers you approved from a project's `.mcp.json` | | `models/` | The code-search models, downloaded once for the computer | Each of these is created the first time it is needed. ### The state folder: `~/.local/state/mochiii/` | Path | What it holds | | - | - | | `memory.db` | The turns of each project's current chat | | `history//` | Saved chats. See [Saved sessions](https://docs.mochiii.in/using/saved-sessions.md) | | `rules/.md` | The rules you saved with `/remember`. You can edit this file | | `active-spec-` | The path of the active spec | | `local-models.json` | The `/agent` and `/web` settings | | `no-index` | The projects you answered `never` for | | `tasks//` | Long tasks, for `/task resume` | | `spend/` | Today's spending, counted against the day's limit | | `logs/daemon-.log` | The background service's log | ### In the project: `/.mochiii/` | Path | What it holds | | - | - | | `index/` | The code-search index | | `logs/toolcalls.jsonl` | A record of each tool call and what was decided | | `backups/` | A copy of each file before and after an edit you accepted | | `trash/` | What the model deleted, so it can be restored | Specs are Markdown files in `/specs/`.
